New partnership with Oxford Brookes University
Oxford YASA Motors and Oxford Brookes University have secured more than £100k of government funding from the Technology Strategy Board for a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership that will radically improve the production potential of the YASA motors.
Using advanced materials and joining technology, the project will aim to reduce manufacturing time and the cost of materials. The partnership will recruit a talented graduate engineer who will work under the supervision of James Broughton, Head of Oxford Brookes’ Joining Technology Research Centre.
The Joining Technology Research Centre at Oxford Brookes has a long track record in leading the development of new materials such as injection moulded polymers and composites, and of the sophisticated adhesives required to make the best of them in practical applications. Part of the Oxford YASA Motors project will investigate ways to disassemble the product at the end of its life, and reclaim the valuable components for more sustainable production.
James Broughton believes the project will challenge both the company and the university. ‘No off-the-shelf solution exists for joining the new materials like this. We’ll be developing and testing in our labs as we go, and we’ll all learn important lessons in the process. It’s an exciting time.’
